About Department

The Department of Sociology initiated its maiden journey in 1970 to impart Master’s Degree in Sociology. In its due course, it started imparting Master’s Degree in Social Work (Self-Financed-2005) in order to meet the reciprocity of both the disciplines that cover vast ranges of complex gamete of social fabrics and forces. The MSW course is accredited by Council on Social Work Education Canada & USA. It also offers Masters of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. The Department has been steadily growing and meeting the emerging challenges. The Department of Sociology is entrusted with the duty to cater the needs of tribal social ecology in which it has been surrounded with, and a vast number of tribal students opt for Sociology to understand their social realities in their perspective. The Department of Sociology has gathered and articulated vast empirical data from tribal perspectives. On the other hand, the Department has been equally careful about the growing industrial set ups and their related studies. This contrast between the tribal ecology and industrialization at the backdrop of post modernity is something the Department of Sociology has been empirically scanning over decades and has proportionately been enriched with. The Department has renowned faculty members with respective specializations to study industrial, tribal social settings, gender studies, vulnerable and needy section of society. It is pertinent to note that some faculty members are well recognized for their contributions at national and international levels. The students of both Sociology and MSW are rigorously involved in studies and sharing their experiences with the faculty in imparting and building knowledge.

Mission

In pursuance of its vision, the Department commits to facilitate the Development of competent Students of Sociology & Social Work to intervene in the interest of larger community at various levels to correct social pathology and bring social change to cater the needs of society.

Objectives

The department started its journey with M.A. in Sociology with the following objectives:

To explore, create and expand the horizone of knowledge;

To cater the regional needs;

To align interdisciplinary perspectives.

PO- 1 Social orientation (A responsible citizenship education) is done through the program. Also developed skills and deep understanding in the subject with the help of curricular and non- curricular activities.
PO- 2 South Gujarat region consists more than 50% tribal population. Students coming from this area are still first generation learners and cope up with the realities and recent trends.
PO- 3 Their main objective is to get job at school level, so they prefer to join master’s program in arts. The program help them to get better position in merit for higher education studies.
PO- 4 After studying the program, students would be also able to compete the UPSC, GPSC, UGC-NET/JRF, GSET and other competitive examinations of Government Departments.
PO- 5 Students would be able to get employment opportunities in the Teaching, Research and NGOs and Private sectors.

The Department of Sociology offers Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) in Sociology since 1970-71 and in Social Work 2018-19 onwards. The Ph.D. in Sociology is being carried out in the following thrust area: Since the society is being changed drastically hence the thrust area is also changed time to time in consonance with the situation. However, the following area of research is underlined: Impact assessment of existing social realities related to tribal, rural and urban communities, vulnerable sections. Moreover, special attentions are being given to understand various cultural textures of different communities, contemporary Issues like migration, women empowerment, living and working conditions of labourers are being understood in rural, urban and Industrial settings. Along with above settings stress is being given understand social change, mass media, policies and governance, with special attention to e-governance, education, environment, sustainable development and so many related issues.

The prime objective of research in social work is to understand the causes of breakdown of social fabric, so that framing of intervention strategies at micro, meso, and macro levels could be made to correct pathological conditions. The doctoral programme (Ph.D.) in Social Work profession stresses upon these above thrust area. Moreover, special attention is also paid to understand Impact assessment of contemporary social problems in various settings namely, education, health in tribal, rural and urban settings. Vulnerable sections, social justice and correctional settings are special area to understand in doctoral programme.

In due recognition of the contributions by the Department, the UGC entrusted the Department with the Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy under 11th Plan in 2007-2012. The Centre had successfully completed 8 research projects on vulnerable groups like the Dalit’s, minorities, women, migrant labourers, etc. The Department has organised five national conferences, four national seminars and workshops covering the theme like marginalization, gender and violence, globalization, social exclusion and inclusive policy and health, etc. From the year 2000 onwards, 09 students have been awarded the M.Phil. Degree and 30 students have been awarded the Ph.D. Degree. The Department has enrolled two foreign students to carry out doctorate programme, one of the candidates has already been awarded doctor of philosophy degree. Two foreign students have enrolled in Master of Social Work Programme, one of them has completed the degree. Moreover, one student is enrolled under the UGC Junior Research Fellow for carrying out Doctoral Programme in Social Work. The Department also offers guidance to students appearing for UGC-NET and GSET exams. So far 21 students have qualified the National Eligibility Test and 19 students in State Eligibility Test. To say the least, one student is awarded Post-Doctoral fellowship by the UGC.

PO- 1 Social orientation (A responsible citizenship education) is done through the program. Also developed skills and deep understanding in the subject with the help of curricular and non- curricular activities.

The Department of Sociology offers Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) in Sociology since 1970-71 and in Social Work 2018-19 onwards. The Ph.D. in Sociology is being carried out in the following thrust area: Since the society is being changed drastically hence the thrust area is also changed time to time in consonance with the situation. However, the following area of research is underlined: Impact assessment of existing social realities related to tribal, rural and urban communities, vulnerable sections. Moreover, special attentions are being given to understand various cultural textures of different communities, contemporary Issues like migration, women empowerment, living and working conditions of labourers are being understood in rural, urban and Industrial settings. Along with above settings stress is being given understand social change, mass media, policies and governance, with special attention to e-governance, education, environment, sustainable development and so many related issues.

The prime objective of research in social work is to understand the causes of breakdown of social fabric, so that framing of intervention strategies at micro, meso, and macro levels could be made to correct pathological conditions. The Department of Sociology offers Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) in Sociology since 1970-71 and in Social Work 2018-19 onwards. The Ph.D. in Sociology is being carried out in the following thrust area: Since the society is being changed drastically hence the thrust area is also changed time to time in consonance with the situation. However, the following area of research is underlined: Impact assessment of existing social realities related to tribal, rural and urban communities, vulnerable sections. Moreover, special attentions are being given to understand various cultural textures of different communities, contemporary Issues like migration, women empowerment, living and working conditions of labourers are being understood in rural, urban and Industrial settings. The prime objective of research in social work is to understand the causes of breakdown of social fabric, so that framing of intervention strategies at micro, meso, and macro levels could be made to correct pathological conditions. The doctoral programme (Ph.D.) in Social Work profession stresses upon these above thrust area. The Department of Sociology offers Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) in Sociology since 1970-71 and in Social Work 2018-19 onwards. The Ph.D. in Sociology is being carried out in the following thrust area: Since the society is being changed drastically hence the thrust area is also changed time to time in consonance with the situation. However, the following area of research is underlined: Impact assessment of existing social realities related to tribal, rural and urban communities, vulnerable sections. Moreover, special attentions are being given to understand various cultural textures of different communities, contemporary Issues like migration, women empowerment, living and working conditions of labourers are being understood in rural, urban and Industrial settings. The prime objective of research in social work is to understand the causes of breakdown of social fabric, so that framing of intervention strategies at micro, meso, and macro levels could be made to correct pathological conditions. The doctoral programme (Ph.D.) in Social Work profession stresses upon these above thrust area. The Department of Sociology offers Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) in Sociology since 1970-71 and in Social Work 2018-19 onwards. The Ph.D. in Sociology is being carried out in the following thrust area: Since the society is being changed drastically hence the thrust area is also changed time to time in consonance with the situation. However, the following area of research is underlined: Impact assessment of existing social realities related to tribal, rural and urban communities, vulnerable sections. Moreover, special attentions are being given to understand various cultural textures of different communities, contemporary Issues like migration, women empowerment, living and working conditions of labourers are being understood in rural, urban and Industrial settings. The prime objective of research in social work is to understand the causes of breakdown of social fabric, so that framing of intervention strategies at micro, meso, and macro levels could be made to correct pathological conditions. The doctoral programme (Ph.D.) in Social Work profession stresses upon these above thrust area. Moreover, special attention is also paid to understand Impact assessment of contemporary social problems in various settings namely, education, health in tribal, rural and urban settings. Vulnerable sections, social justice and correctional settings are special area to understand in doctoral programme.
