The Department is one of the premier institutes of the South Gujarat offering the PG and Research degrees in Economics. The PG curriculum remains updated regularly with the inclusion of the intra-disciplinary papers like Accountancy, Agri-Business, Research Methodology, Computer Applications in Economics Analysis and Indian Political System as part of the course. The department has completed over 40 research projects to date. Over 125 research students have been awarded Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degrees. The faculty of the department is involved in the research related to the cross-section and time-series data. The department has also initiated the publications of working papers in the department. To now 7 working papers have been published. This apart, Capacity building workshops and seminars for the students and the teachers in the affiliated colleges have been a regular feature for the department. Needless to say that the beneficiaries have been the students belonging to the first generation and also the teachers in the affiliated colleges.

Eligibility Criteria
A candidate who has obtained B.A. Economics degree shall be eligible to apply for M.A. Economics. Vibrant And Conducive Atmosphere For Research
Being one of the oldest departments on the campus it has one of the strongest research base. The department since its inception has over 40 research projects sanctioned by the apex bodies like the UGC, ICCR, ICSSR, corporate bodies like ONGC,NTPC IDBI,NACO and UNDP among others. The thrust areas of research have been themes related to Industry, agriculture, health and education. Currently the department is prominently known for the capabilities in research methodology related to social sciences. The faculty in the department is well versed in the use of statistical and econometric techniques for analyzing the cross section and the time series data pertaining to the various sectors of the economy. Faculties have created their own research data and literature in their own areas for the benefit of the teaching staff in the affiliated areas as well as the research students in particular.

Team we shape the future of Department of Economics
The Department of economics has a dedicated Ladies’ Rest room to cater to over 90 percent of the girls’ students in the department. The furnished room has the facility like cradle for new born, dressing table and two beds for any health emergencies. This apart it has also feeding area for nursing mothers. The department has also purchased a sanitary pad vending machine apart from incinerator to burn the used pads. Recently the department could purchase 70 desktops for a newly refurbished computer laboratory In the department The department also houses a beautiful seminar hall catering to an audience of around 150 persons. The hall is one of the most sought after one on the campus for various academic and cultural purposes.

The department has a large library catering to over 50 students at a time apart from well-furnished research cabins for 8 to 10 students. With a collection of over 5000 titles the department also subscribes to important journals and newspapers in English and Gujarati. On the subscription to the free dish services of the Doordarshan the library also has in display the live news and educational channels for the visitors. “Soul Software for the library is in place. A dedicated space for browsing corner is provided for the students.
