About Department

Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies inculcates diagnostic abilities in the students so as to make them competent to identify the root causes of the problems faced by rural people. It is one of its own kind of interdisciplinary department having strong roots in learning, research and extension. The PG curriculum of the course is mainly classified under social science and agricultural science related subjects. From the academic year 2013-14 the department is offering specialization in Rural Development and Natural Resource Management at MRS. Department has organized a number of National and Regional level seminars and workshops. Department is vigorously involves in census survey and social audit of an industries and village/ town. The department has so far completed nearly 50 research projects and published more than 400 research papers and more than 20 books. Faculty members have brought the honor to this department by working as experts in various state and central government agencies, commission, department and bodies. Students of the department is actively involved in the extension and co-curricular activities. The students of our department prepare “Integrated Village Development Plan” using local resources. These plans can be used by the district administration for development of villages identified under Adarsh Gram Yojana.

Ph.D in Rural Studies

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies offers a multidisciplinary research program leading to Ph.D. in rural studies. The areas of research include social, economical, agriculture and animal husbandry, and all allied aspects concerning rural areas. Presently the areas of interest of research supervisors include, but not limited to, Malnutrition among tribal children, natural resource management, sustainable development, panchayati raj, impact analysis and monitoring and evaluation of various rural development programs implemented by the State and Central Governments and NGO’s.

Ph.D. programme is aimed towards promoting research activities. It will help researchers develop critical thinking skills that will help in their research. The researchers will be capable of undertaking various research projects that will benefit the society.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body in concerned subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who have obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Candidates who qualify for teachers’ fellowship of UGC, or who have passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) examination, NET/SLET/GATE, NET conducted by any National Body or who have the M.Phil. Degree from a recognized university shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they shall have to present research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee.

Notwithstanding anything contained above, a student who has passed the Master's Degree Examination in any subject may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of University Teaching to register for an allied subject under the same and/ or other Faculty for the Ph.D. degree.

A candidate desirous of pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research shall submit application with justification well in advance. Formal application will be subject to the approval and conditions specified by the RAC of concerned subject.

University shall conduct an entrance test (offline or online). The Syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government from time to time.

All the qualified candidates shall present research proposal before Research Advisory Committee.

All the candidates who have been recommended by RAC for admission to Ph.D. program shall have to attend Pre-Registration course work and shall have to appear for the examination of Pre-Registration course work. The candidate shall have to pass the Pre-Registration course work examination in maximally two attempts (including the regular one). The Syllabus of Pre-Registration course work shall be in accordance to the notification of UGC.

Presentation of the research proposal shall be assessed by the Research Advisory Committee. Considering the aforesaid method of merit calculation the Research Advisory Committee shall submit a report consisting of the presentations by the candidates and the list of the candidates recommended for admissions, along with the list of the respective Research Supervisors. On the basis of the report of the Research Advisory Committee, the final list of admitted candidates shall be declared. On successfully completion of preregistration course work the candidate shall be finally registered.

If any seat/s remains vacant after the last date of registration, waiting list will be operated for a period of thirty days from formally announced last date of registration. However, if the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, a Special Admission Drive, for that particular category, shall be conducted within one month from the date of closure of admissions. Even after special drive the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, such seats shall not be converted to any other category and shall be kept vacant.

M.R.S (Master of Rural Studies)

Master Rural Studies (MRS) program is especially designed for the graduate students who have their Bachelors Degree with 40% of marks in any subject with English as one of the subjects during any one of the years of graduation

The core objective of the MRS programme is to inculcate diagnostic ability and prepare the students for productive career in rural development as trained and committed personnel who understands the real cause of under development and provides solutions for development. The student can become an agent of change with extension and research activities.

Program trains students with the basics components of rural society and the problems faced by them. It includes socio-economic environment of rural areas and technological gaps in various fields of rural livelihood.

PO2 : Critical Thinking Development
The program develops the skills of critical thinking, identifying root causes of the problem and their solutions, evaluative learning of various techniques, and understanding the essence of the problem.

PO3 : Evaluation of the problems
The program trains students with the latest methodologies that are being used in evaluation of the problems faced by the rural society. The continuous syllabi review adds value to the program for the outgoing students and make them ready to face challenging demands of the real world.

PO4 : Resource mapping
The program teaches the students to apply the advanced tools to evaluate the human and natural resources to solve real world problems faced by the rural society.

PO5 : Nurturing Project Planning and Management Capabilities
The program trains students for designing and conceptualizing the village development plans through techniques of PRA and augmenting the resources and Government interventions for sustainable rural development.

PO6 : Real World Problem
Real world problems related to climate change, sustainable development and gender sensitization provides the candidates exposure to work in the challenging and demanding environment of the rural areas. The course is designed to give primary information on animal husbandry for which the Government of India and State Government provides number of incentives. It deals with causes of low production and alternatives to increase it. New segments of fisheries and poultry in rural areas of south Gujarat can promote livelihood activities.

CO1: The students will come to know about the Concept of CSR, dimensions and importance of CSR, understand the historical development of CSR in the world as well in India.
CO2: The students will critically observe the historical scenario of Rural development in India and identify the role and importance of Charitable / Philanthropic & Volunteer sectors as accepted and promoted by the Government in the Rural Development Sectors. The students will be practically able to identify and categorize the Financial and technical support being provided to NGOs for developing CSR. Candidates seeking admission to Master’s Degree in Rural studies (M.R.S.) should have obtained 50% at the Bachelor’s Degree. The Candidate should have also offered English as one of the subjects at least, during one of the three years of their graduate study. This regulation will not be applicable to candidates who have studied in English Medium. Candidate seeking admission to M.R.S. Course must appear at the entrance test held by the Department of Rural studies and personal interview before a selection committee. However, if numbers of eligible candidates are less than 90, the assessment of the students will be done through Personal Interview only.

Post Graduate Diploma in Natural Resource Management

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies is playing a significant role in educating and providing a continuous stream of trained and dedicated personnel to Rural Development Institutes at large. The Department is offering a two year full-time Master of Rural Studies Programme (MRS) the first of its kind in the entire country. The department had instituted 3 post graduate diploma programmes, in the academic year 2003-04. In view of continuous demand from the persons employed in the Rural Development Institutes and organizations and the current need of trained manpower in the rural sector the Department is now offering 1 year Post graduate Diplomas in Natural Resource Management and in Rural Development from the academic year 2015-16.

Fees
Fees Total Fee for the Post-Graduate Programme in Natural Resource Management shall be Rs. 15000/- (Fifteen thousand) which may be paid in two installments (Rs.10000/- +Rs.5000/-) as per the dates prescribed by the Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies from time to time. Students shall also have to pay other fees as per the norms of VNSGU as declared from time to time.
For any female/SC/ST and SEBC (with non-creamy layer certificate) candidate Total Fee for the Post-Graduate Programme in Natural Resource Management shall be Rs. 10000/- (Ten thousand) which may be paid in two installments (Rs.7500/- +Rs.2500/-) as per the dates prescribed by the Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies from time to time. Research For Sustainable Rural Development

The department encourages research in all the fields including but not limited to, Water Harvesting, Malnutrition, Joint Forest Management, Animal Husbandary and Diarying, Impact analysis of various government schemes etc. that ultimately help achieving Sustainable Rural Development. Infrastructure related to the research is avaliable with the department and is extended to all the research students.

Ph.D in Rural Studies

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies offers a multidisciplinary research program leading to Ph.D. in rural studies. The areas of research include social, economical, agriculture and animal husbandry, and all allied aspects concerning rural areas. Presently the areas of interest of research supervisors include, but not limited to, Malnutrition among tribal children, natural resource management, sustainable development, panchayati raj, impact analysis and monitoring and evaluation of various rural development programs implemented by the State and Central Governments and NGO’s.

Ph.D. programme is aimed towards promoting research activities. It will help researchers develop critical thinking skills that will help in their research. The researchers will be capable of undertaking various research projects that will benefit the society.

PO1: Fundamental Knowledge Enrichment
Program trains students with the core concepts in Rural Studies domain. It also makes research scholars capable of using core concepts in the conceptualization of domain specific research.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body in concerned subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who have obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Candidates who qualify for teachers’ fellowship of UGC, or who have passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) examination, NET/SLET/GATE, NET conducted by any National Body or who have the M.Phil. Degree from a recognized university shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they shall have to present research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee.

Notwithstanding anything contained above, a student who has passed the Master's Degree Examination in any subject may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of University Teaching to register for an allied subject under the same and/ or other Faculty for the Ph.D. degree.

A candidate desirous of pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research shall submit application with justification well in advance. Formal application will be subject to the approval and conditions specified by the RAC of concerned subject.

University shall conduct an entrance test (offline or online). The Syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government from time to time.

All the qualified candidates shall present research proposal before Research Advisory Committee.

All the candidates who have been recommended by RAC for admission to Ph.D. program shall have to attend Pre-Registration course work and shall have to appear for the examination of Pre-Registration course work. The candidate shall have to pass the Pre-Registration course work examination in maximally two attempts (including the regular one). The Syllabus of Pre-Registration course work shall be in accordance to the notification of UGC.

Presentation of the research proposal shall be assessed by the Research Advisory Committee. Considering the aforesaid method of merit calculation the Research Advisory Committee shall submit a report consisting of the presentations by the candidates and the list of the candidates recommended for admissions, along with the list of the respective Research Supervisors. On the basis of the report of the Research Advisory Committee, the final list of admitted candidates shall be declared. On successfully completion of preregistration course work the candidate shall be finally registered.

If any seat/s remains vacant after the last date of registration, waiting list will be operated for a period of thirty days from formally announced last date of registration. However, if the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, a Special Admission Drive, for that particular category, shall be conducted within one month from the date of closure of admissions. Even after special drive the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, such seats shall not be converted to any other category and shall be kept vacant.

M.R.S (Master of Rural Studies)

Master Rural Studies (MRS) program is especially designed for the graduate students who have their Bachelors Degree with 40% of marks in any subject with English as one of the subjects during any one of the years of graduation

The core objective of the MRS programme is to inculcate diagnostic ability and prepare the students for productive career in rural development as trained and committed personnel who understands the real cause of under development and provides solutions for development. The student can become an agent of change with extension and research activities.

Program trains students with the basics components of rural society and the problems faced by them. It includes socio-economic environment of rural areas and technological gaps in various fields of rural livelihood.

PO3 : Evaluation of the problems

It deals with causes of low production and alternatives to increase it. New segments of fisheries and poultry in rural areas of south Gujarat can promote livelihood activities.

CO1: The students will come to know about the Concept of CSR, dimensions and importance of CSR, understand the historical development of CSR in the world as well in India.
CO2: The students will critically observe the historical scenario of Rural development in India and identify the role and importance of Charitable / Philanthropic & Volunteer sectors as accepted and promoted by the Government in the Rural Development Sectors. The students will be practically able to identify and categorize the Financial and technical support being provided to NGOs for developing CSR. The students will be able to practically classify the role of corporate sectors in Rural Development by observing the CSR initiatives and interventions.

The Candidate should have also offered English as one of the subjects at least, during one of the three years of their graduate study. This regulation will not be applicable to candidates who have studied in English Medium. Candidate seeking admission to M.R.S. Course must appear at the entrance test held by the Department of Rural studies and personal interview before a selection committee. However, if numbers of eligible candidates are less than 90, the assessment of the students will be done through Personal Interview only.

Post Graduate Diploma in Natural Resource Management

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies is playing a significant role in educating and providing a continuous stream of trained and dedicated personnel to Rural Development Institutes at large. The Department is offering a two year full-time Master of Rural Studies Programme (MRS) the first of its kind in the entire country. The department had instituted 3 post graduate diploma programmes, in the academic year 2003-04. In view of continuous demand from the persons employed in the Rural Development Institutes and organizations and the current need of trained manpower in the rural sector the Department is now offering 1 year Post graduate Diplomas in Natural Resource Management and in Rural Development from the academic year 2015-16.

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies offers a multidisciplinary research program leading to Ph.D. in rural studies. The areas of research include social, economical, agriculture and animal husbandry, and all allied aspects concerning rural areas. Presently the areas of interest of research supervisors include, but not limited to, Malnutrition among tribal children, natural resource management, sustainable development, panchayati raj, impact analysis and monitoring and evaluation of various rural development programs implemented by the State and Central Governments and NGO’s.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body in concerned subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who have obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Candidates who qualify for teachers’ fellowship of UGC, or who have passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) examination, NET/SLET/GATE, NET conducted by any National Body or who have the M.Phil. Degree from a recognized university shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they shall have to present research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee.

Notwithstanding anything contained above, a student who has passed the Master's Degree Examination in any subject may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of University Teaching to register for an allied subject under the same and/ or other Faculty for the Ph.D. degree.

A candidate desirous of pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research shall submit application with justification well in advance. Formal application will be subject to the approval and conditions specified by the RAC of concerned subject.

University shall conduct an entrance test (offline or online). The Syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government from time to time.

All the qualified candidates shall present research proposal before Research Advisory Committee.

All the candidates who have been recommended by RAC for admission to Ph.D. program shall have to attend Pre-Registration course work and shall have to appear for the examination of Pre-Registration course work. The candidate shall have to pass the Pre-Registration course work examination in maximally two attempts (including the regular one). The Syllabus of Pre-Registration course work shall be in accordance to the notification of UGC.

Presentation of the research proposal shall be assessed by the Research Advisory Committee. Considering the aforesaid method of merit calculation the Research Advisory Committee shall submit a report consisting of the presentations by the candidates and the list of the candidates recommended for admissions, along with the list of the respective Research Supervisors. On the basis of the report of the Research Advisory Committee, the final list of admitted candidates shall be declared. On successfully completion of preregistration course work the candidate shall be finally registered.

If any seat/s remains vacant after the last date of registration, waiting list will be operated for a period of thirty days from formally announced last date of registration. However, if the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, a Special Admission Drive, for that particular category, shall be conducted within one month from the date of closure of admissions. Even after special drive the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, such seats shall not be converted to any other category and shall be kept vacant.

Master Rural Studies (MRS) program is especially designed for the graduate students who have their Bachelors Degree with 40% of marks in any subject with English as one of the subjects during any one of the years of graduation

Fees Total Fee for the Post-Graduate Programme in Natural Resource Management shall be Rs. 15000/- (Fifteen thousand) which may be paid in two installments (Rs.10000/- +Rs.5000/-) as per the dates prescribed by the Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies from time to time. Ph.D in Rural Studies

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies offers a multidisciplinary research program leading to Ph.D. in rural studies. The areas of research include social, economical, agriculture and animal husbandry, and all allied aspects concerning rural areas. Presently the areas of interest of research supervisors include, but not limited to, Malnutrition among tribal children, natural resource management, sustainable development, panchayati raj, impact analysis and monitoring and evaluation of various rural development programs implemented by the State and Central Governments and NGO’s.

Ph.D. programme is aimed towards promoting research activities. It will help researchers develop critical thinking skills that will help in their research. The researchers will be capable of undertaking various research projects that will benefit the society.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body in concerned subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who have obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Candidates who qualify for teachers’ fellowship of UGC, or who have passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) examination, NET/SLET/GATE, NET conducted by any National Body or who have the M.Phil. Degree from a recognized university shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they shall have to present research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee.

Notwithstanding anything contained above, a student who has passed the Master's Degree Examination in any subject may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of University Teaching to register for an allied subject under the same and/ or other Faculty for the Ph.D. degree.

A candidate desirous of pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research shall submit application with justification well in advance. Formal application will be subject to the approval and conditions specified by the RAC of concerned subject.

University shall conduct an entrance test (offline or online). The Syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government from time to time.

All the qualified candidates shall present research proposal before Research Advisory Committee.

All the candidates who have been recommended by RAC for admission to Ph.D. program shall have to attend Pre-Registration course work and shall have to appear for the examination of Pre-Registration course work. The candidate shall have to pass the Pre-Registration course work examination in maximally two attempts (including the regular one). The Syllabus of Pre-Registration course work shall be in accordance to the notification of UGC.

Presentation of the research proposal shall be assessed by the Research Advisory Committee. Considering the aforesaid method of merit calculation the Research Advisory Committee shall submit a report consisting of the presentations by the candidates and the list of the candidates recommended for admissions, along with the list of the respective Research Supervisors. On the basis of the report of the Research Advisory Committee, the final list of admitted candidates shall be declared. On successfully completion of preregistration course work the candidate shall be finally registered.

If any seat/s remains vacant after the last date of registration, waiting list will be operated for a period of thirty days from formally announced last date of registration. However, if the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, a Special Admission Drive, for that particular category, shall be conducted within one month from the date of closure of admissions. Even after special drive the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, such seats shall not be converted to any other category and shall be kept vacant.

M.R.S (Master of Rural Studies)

Master Rural Studies (MRS) program is especially designed for the graduate students who have their Bachelors Degree with 40% of marks in any subject with English as one of the subjects during any one of the years of graduation

The core objective of the MRS programme is to inculcate diagnostic ability and prepare the students for productive career in rural development as trained and committed personnel who understands the real cause of under development and provides solutions for development. The student can become an agent of change with extension and research activities.

This regulation will not be applicable to candidates who have studied in English Medium. Candidate seeking admission to M.R.S. Course must appear at the entrance test held by the Department of Rural studies and personal interview before a selection committee. However, if numbers of eligible candidates are less than 90, the assessment of the students will be done through Personal Interview only.

Post Graduate Diploma in Natural Resource Management

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies is playing a significant role in educating and providing a continuous stream of trained and dedicated personnel to Rural Development Institutes at large. The Department is offering a two year full-time Master of Rural Studies Programme (MRS) the first of its kind in the entire country. The department had instituted 3 post graduate diploma programmes, in the academic year 2003-04. In view of continuous demand from the persons employed in the Rural Development Institutes and organizations and the current need of trained manpower in the rural sector the Department is now offering 1 year Post graduate Diplomas in Natural Resource Management and in Rural Development from the academic year 2015-16.

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies offers a multidisciplinary research program leading to Ph.D. in rural studies. The areas of research include social, economical, agriculture and animal husbandry, and all allied aspects concerning rural areas. Presently the areas of interest of research supervisors include, but not limited to, Malnutrition among tribal children, natural resource management, sustainable development, panchayati raj, impact analysis and monitoring and evaluation of various rural development programs implemented by the State and Central Governments and NGO’s.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body in concerned subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who have obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Candidates who qualify for teachers’ fellowship of UGC, or who have passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) examination, NET/SLET/GATE, NET conducted by any National Body or who have the M.Phil. Degree from a recognized university shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they shall have to present research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee.

Notwithstanding anything contained above, a student who has passed the Master's Degree Examination in any subject may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of University Teaching to register for an allied subject under the same and/ or other Faculty for the Ph.D. degree.

A candidate desirous of pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research shall submit application with justification well in advance. Formal application will be subject to the approval and conditions specified by the RAC of concerned subject.

University shall conduct an entrance test (offline or online). The Syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government from time to time.

All the qualified candidates shall present research proposal before Research Advisory Committee.

All the candidates who have been recommended by RAC for admission to Ph.D. program shall have to attend Pre-Registration course work and shall have to appear for the examination of Pre-Registration course work. The candidate shall have to pass the Pre-Registration course work examination in maximally two attempts (including the regular one). The Syllabus of Pre-Registration course work shall be in accordance to the notification of UGC.

Presentation of the research proposal shall be assessed by the Research Advisory Committee. Considering the aforesaid method of merit calculation the Research Advisory Committee shall submit a report consisting of the presentations by the candidates and the list of the candidates recommended for admissions, along with the list of the respective Research Supervisors. On the basis of the report of the Research Advisory Committee, the final list of admitted candidates shall be declared. On successfully completion of preregistration course work the candidate shall be finally registered.

If any seat/s remains vacant after the last date of registration, waiting list will be operated for a period of thirty days from formally announced last date of registration. However, if the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, a Special Admission Drive, for that particular category, shall be conducted within one month from the date of closure of admissions. Even after special drive the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, such seats shall not be converted to any other category and shall be kept vacant.

Master Rural Studies (MRS) program is especially designed for the graduate students who have their Bachelors Degree with 40% of marks in any subject with English as one of the subjects during any one of the years of graduation

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies is playing a significant role in educating and providing a continuous stream of trained and dedicated personnel to Rural Development Institutes at large. The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies offers a multidisciplinary research program leading to Ph.D. in rural studies. The areas of research include social, economical, agriculture and animal husbandry, and all allied aspects concerning rural areas. Presently the areas of interest of research supervisors include, but not limited to, Malnutrition among tribal children, natural resource management, sustainable development, panchayati raj, impact analysis and monitoring and evaluation of various rural development programs implemented by the State and Central Governments and NGO’s.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body in concerned subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who have obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Candidates who qualify for teachers’ fellowship of UGC, or who have passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) examination, NET/SLET/GATE, NET conducted by any National Body or who have the M.Phil. Degree from a recognized university shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they shall have to present research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee.

Notwithstanding anything contained above, a student who has passed the Master's Degree Examination in any subject may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of University Teaching to register for an allied subject under the same and/ or other Faculty for the Ph.D. degree.

A candidate desirous of pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research shall submit application with justification well in advance. Formal application will be subject to the approval and conditions specified by the RAC of concerned subject.

University shall conduct an entrance test (offline or online). The Syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government from time to time.

All the qualified candidates shall present research proposal before Research Advisory Committee.

All the candidates who have been recommended by RAC for admission to Ph.D. program shall have to attend Pre-Registration course work and shall have to appear for the examination of Pre-Registration course work. The candidate shall have to pass the Pre-Registration course work examination in maximally two attempts (including the regular one). The Syllabus of Pre-Registration course work shall be in accordance to the notification of UGC.

Presentation of the research proposal shall be assessed by the Research Advisory Committee. Considering the aforesaid method of merit calculation the Research Advisory Committee shall submit a report consisting of the presentations by the candidates and the list of the candidates recommended for admissions, along with the list of the respective Research Supervisors. On the basis of the report of the Research Advisory Committee, the final list of admitted candidates shall be declared. On successfully completion of preregistration course work the candidate shall be finally registered.

If any seat/s remains vacant after the last date of registration, waiting list will be operated for a period of thirty days from formally announced last date of registration. However, if the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, a Special Admission Drive, for that particular category, shall be conducted within one month from the date of closure of admissions. Even after special drive the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, such seats shall not be converted to any other category and shall be kept vacant.

Master Rural Studies (MRS) program is especially designed for the graduate students who have their Bachelors Degree with 40% of marks in any subject with English as one of the subjects during any one of the years of graduation

Post Graduate Diploma in Natural Resource Management

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies is playing a significant role in educating and providing a continuous stream of trained and dedicated personnel to Rural Development Institutes at large. The Department is offering a two year full-time Master of Rural Studies Programme (MRS) the first of its kind in the entire country. The department had instituted 3 post graduate diploma programmes, in the academic year 2003-04. In view of continuous demand from the persons employed in the Rural Development Institutes and organizations and the current need of trained manpower in the rural sector the Department is now offering 1 year Post graduate Diplomas in Natural Resource Management and in Rural Development from the academic year 2015-16.

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies offers a multidisciplinary research program leading to Ph.D. in rural studies. The areas of research include social, economical, agriculture and animal husbandry, and all allied aspects concerning rural areas. Presently the areas of interest of research supervisors include, but not limited to, Malnutrition among tribal children, natural resource management, sustainable development, panchayati raj, impact analysis and monitoring and evaluation of various rural development programs implemented by the State and Central Governments and NGO’s.

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body in concerned subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who have obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.

Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.

Candidates who qualify for teachers’ fellowship of UGC, or who have passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) examination, NET/SLET/GATE, NET conducted by any National Body or who have the M.Phil. Degree from a recognized university shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they shall have to present research proposal before the Research Advisory Committee.

Notwithstanding anything contained above, a student who has passed the Master's Degree Examination in any subject may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of University Teaching to register for an allied subject under the same and/ or other Faculty for the Ph.D. degree.

A candidate desirous of pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research shall submit application with justification well in advance. Formal application will be subject to the approval and conditions specified by the RAC of concerned subject.

University shall conduct an entrance test (offline or online). The Syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government from time to time.

All the qualified candidates shall present research proposal before Research Advisory Committee.

All the candidates who have been recommended by RAC for admission to Ph.D. program shall have to attend Pre-Registration course work and shall have to appear for the examination of Pre-Registration course work. The candidate shall have to pass the Pre-Registration course work examination in maximally two attempts (including the regular one). The Syllabus of Pre-Registration course work shall be in accordance to the notification of UGC.

Presentation of the research proposal shall be assessed by the Research Advisory Committee. Considering the aforesaid method of merit calculation the Research Advisory Committee shall submit a report consisting of the presentations by the candidates and the list of the candidates recommended for admissions, along with the list of the respective Research Supervisors. On the basis of the report of the Research Advisory Committee, the final list of admitted candidates shall be declared. On successfully completion of preregistration course work the candidate shall be finally registered.

If any seat/s remains vacant after the last date of registration, waiting list will be operated for a period of thirty days from formally announced last date of registration. However, if the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, a Special Admission Drive, for that particular category, shall be conducted within one month from the date of closure of admissions. Even after special drive the seats allotted for SC / ST / OBC (Non Creamy layer) / Differently-abled categories remain unfilled, such seats shall not be converted to any other category and shall be kept vacant.

Master Rural Studies (MRS) program is especially designed for the graduate students who have their Bachelors Degree with 40% of marks in any subject with English as one of the subjects during any one of the years of graduation

The Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies is playing a significant role in educating and providing a continuous stream of trained and dedicated personnel to Rural Development Institutes at large. In view of continuous demand from the persons employed in the Rural Development Institutes and organizations and the current need of trained manpower in the rural sector the Department is now offering 1 year Post graduate Diplomas in Natural Resource Management and in Rural Development from the academic year 2015-16.




  • To make student aware of the real needs of the fast growing and changing environment affecting the life of rural people.

  • To provide an opportunity to study the current status and ways and means to conserve natural resources.

  • To make the students aware about the importance of water harvesting techniques adopted in Gujarat and other parts of India.

  • To make the students learn about relationship between Natural Resource Management and sustainable livelihood.

  • To cater the need for NRM qualified person for the institutes and organizations associated with Rural Development.

1 year (2 Semesters)

Graduate from any UGC recognized University.

As per the announcement made by the Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies.

For filling application for admission, students are advised to visit VNSGU website.

  • If the number of student's applications exceeds number of seats for this Post graduate diploma course, then Students to this course will be selected on the basis of their score in written Test and personal interview organized by the Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies.

  • Students pursuing any other course can simultaneously pursue this post graduate diploma in Natural Resource Management as per the norms of the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University. Student can pursue this course as an external student and can appear in examination fulfilling other requirements of the course.

Fees
Fees Total Fee for the Post-Graduate Programme in Natural Resource Management shall be Rs. 15000/- (Fifteen thousand) which may be paid in two installments (Rs.10000/- +Rs.5000/-) as per the dates prescribed by the Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies from time to time. Students shall also have to pay other fees as per the norms of VNSGU as declared from time to time.
For any female/SC/ST and SEBC (with non-creamy layer certificate) candidate Total Fee for the Post-Graduate Programme in Natural Resource Management shall be Rs. 10000/- (Ten thousand) which may be paid in two installments (Rs.7500/- +Rs.2500/-) as per the dates prescribed by the Mahatma Gandhi Department of Rural Studies from time to time. Students shall also have to pay other fees as per the norms of VNSGU as declared from time to time.
For Teaching or Non teaching Employees working in Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Campus. Total Fee for the Post-Graduate Programme in Natural Resource Management shall be Rs. 5000/- (Five thousand). Students shall also have to pay other fees as per the norms of VNSGU as declared from time to time.
